After all it is a good thing to laugh and if a straw can tickle a man, it is an instrument of happiness –
John Dryden.
Today mom woke me up early unlike other winter days; I opened my eyes quickly when mom called my name, stretched my arms a little, woke up, wore my baby pink jacket, then the socks and then wore the woollen cap closing the knobs and chains of the jacket.
It was very icy today; I realized this as soon as I woke up and looked outside through the unlocked window of the hall.
The air made a ‘wooooohooooooo woooohooooorrrrr’ noise.
The tallest Florida tree planted by me was at danger today, it moved very high in the winds and I doubted if it tremble like this for long; very soon it may fall because it wasn’t much thick by the stems.
Then I wore my gloves, went to kitchen, simmered some drinking water and filled my hot water flask and then I poured some hot water into Little bucket for grooming the teeth.
I checked the milk kept in a bowl was iced, entirety was freezing.
It was 9 a.m. at what time I took a shower and got ready, I looked outside if there is any sign of sun gleams but no, there were bedspreads of clouds everywhere in the skies, I instantaneously closed the window and went to kitchen.
Mom, me and my sister we all started preparing for the festival.
Makar Sankranti At home –
14th January every year is celebrated as Makar Sakranti at our house. On this day we prepare sweets made up of sesame seeds (til), there is a tradition to make a special Khichda made up with mixture of milk, rice and some lentils. It is cooked for 6-7 hours on low flame and granny says the more it is cooked, the better and delicious it tastes.
We were making sweet and spiced pakodas, some potato koftas and mom made the Sweet Traditional Khichda along with the sesame ladoos.
After chopping onions, we boiled potatoes, peeled garlic cloves. We also did the coriander and chilli paste …this is how the day went on at our side working in the kithchen.
Maid came and she did the utensils and sweeping work, after which clothes were washed and then left for drying on terrace. The sky was already colourful as there were plenty of kites in the sky already.

The fever of Makar Sankranti start months ago –
My little brother is a big fan of flying kites, he have brought 200+ of kites and have already tied the thread on them a day before for enjoying it the next day. The thread used for flying kites is very thick so he has covered his hands with bandages in advance.
After enjoying this super delicious lunch, we went back to blanket, In the meantime mom donated the stoles which she purchased to help the needy from winter. It is a custom followed by our family that the married women have to buy 14 things, and then worship them as per the tradition and then donated the 13 of them keeping the 14th one with her. It can be anything depends upon the financial conditional of the house.
Then for some time we decided to visit the terrace and check the kites flying in the sky, with DJ playing rocking music all over , it was colourful sight but the winds were so strong that I couldn’t stay up for long, I came downside took my cold and fever medicines and went back to sleeping.
Before I went to sleep, Granny came outside to sit under sun; we all went there to sit with her.
We all were happy and were singing folk songs sung on the day.
After half an hour I dropped her back to Home for sleeping, I came back again.
I slept back, I heard grandpa calling out my name loudly.
I rushed to check what he was saying; he said that granny fall down, she is bleeding from head.
We all ran there immediately, she was sitting on the floor, and her head was bleeding. Bhabhi was holding the injured place with a cloth to stop the blood and bhaiya went to take a doctor.
We were all scared, papa came in sometime. The doctor examined the injury. It wasn’t serious he said, this made us calm.
Seeing the blood everywhere we all were terrified. The doctor bandaged the injured place.
Everyone was with her and so I came back to home because it wasn’t locked. I cried out my heart because it was so tough for me to see my grandma in pain. I can face everything but not the pain of my closed ones and I am most close to my grandparents. I wiped my tears, when mom came.
Later I prepared ginger tea for everyone. After tea, we cleaned the vegetable and did preparations for dinner.
During the evening we went back to her, she was lying on bed, and I so wanted to hug her. I wish I had that injury in place of her. Then seeing her and talking with her, made me feel good.
I came outside and sat sometimes alone. I saw a girl was trying to fly a kite, the sun was about to set, clouds were getting superior and the day was gradually changing.

Birds were all on a ride to home and I learned a lesson
Life goes on…..There are sunsets, there are sunrises. After every sunset come a sunrise and it was just a bad day, Instead of cursing God for the injury I learned that I should be thankful that she is okay now. There isn’t any severe injury. I was satisfied with the change in me. I was happy to be matured, and the volcano that disturbed me for years was silent now. I realised that I shouldn’t concentrate on what haven’t happened, instead accept the thing that happened and find the best ways to deal with the situation.
After some time I came back and then dinner was done, we flied kites and enjoyed the day with granny sitting beside us. Her smile bloomed when she saw us happy no matter whatever the situation is.
Later we watched TV and surfed on the web. Her smile gave me a kick to leave life happily. Grandparents are the best treasure anyone can have, they shower unlimited love and care without any selfishness and I was proud that I have both of them with me showering me their blessings.
Giving them medicines and then covering them with two quilts and 3 blankets….. (Don’t be surprised: P, at old age people feel colder) They slept.
I wrote down the day in my diary and slept too murmuring that I am happy, I have my grandparents with me.
Little one was disturbing me with the cuts on his finger by flying kites and I laughed a lot teasing him
Aur udaooooooo….kites with sharp thread.
